How this started

I recently got into mushroom growing with a friend. We wanted a fun way to make some money, and growing mushrooms hooked us almost right away. Like most people, we started on YouTube. I still remember one really good video about estimating the costs of starting a mushroom growing and selling operation.

Then we tried to run the numbers ourselves, and that part was genuinely hard. The costs, the yields, all of it. And everything depends on everything else. Change your biological efficiency or your price per pound and the whole picture shifts. Trying to track that across scattered notes and half-finished spreadsheets was a mess.

So I built the tool I wanted

I'm into coding, so with a new Claude Code subscription I decided to build the calculator I wished we'd had, as a passion project. That became the Mycelocity calculators: a set of tools that covers the main calculations for growing mushrooms as a business. They share one grow profile, so you change a value once and everything downstream updates with it — yield, cost, profit, break-even, capacity, ROI — instead of you redoing the math by hand.

For the two of us as beginners, the tools here were enough to get going and gave us solid estimates to plan around. I might keep adding calculators for more niche stuff over time, but the core is already what we actually used.

How the numbers work

Nothing here is a black box. Each calculator shows the exact formula it uses, drawn from standard cultivation metrics — biological efficiency measured against dry substrate weight — and basic unit economics like cost of goods, contribution margin, break-even and payback. The default values are sensible starting points based on common species (oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, king oyster) and typical small setups. They're meant to be replaced with your own measured numbers as soon as you have a few flushes logged. The guides explain the reasoning behind each one.

Who it's for

People in the same spot we were: curious beginners sizing up a first grow, and hobbyists wondering whether mushrooms could actually make money. It's completely free, with no sign-up — if a default looks off or you spot something that could be clearer, I'd genuinely like to know.
